The route first reaches the glacially carved bowl of Tarsar at 3,720m, then climbs to the pass above it before descending to the wild, remote Marsar lake — less visited and arguably more dramatic. The green meadows (margs) and shepherd encampments along the way provide an authentic slice of Kashmiri high-altitude life.
The visual transition from the green Aru Valley through the pass to the glacial twin lakes, with the Kolahoi glacier glinting in the distance, is Kashmir trekking at its finest.
