All AdventuresThe Adventure
The Tarsar Marsar trek takes you to two of Kashmir's most beautiful alpine lakes through meadows and passes above the Aru and Pahalgam valleys. The route first reaches the glacially carved bowl of Tarsar at 3,720m, then climbs to the pass above it before descending to the wild, remote Marsar lake — less visited and arguably more dramatic. The green meadows (margs) and shepherd encampments along the way provide an authentic slice of Kashmiri high-altitude life.
Highlights
The visual transition from the green Aru Valley through the pass to the glacial twin lakes, with the Kolahoi glacier glinting in the distance, is Kashmir trekking at its finest.
Suitability
Safety & Prep
Aru requires Pahalgam-area permits for foreigners. The pass between Tarsar and Marsar is steep and can be snowy in July. Register at the Forest Department checkpost at Aru before starting.
